Lomi Lomi Massage is considered an authentic and ancient form of healing and is used as a restorative, therapeutic health practice for men, women, children and families worldwide. The practice of Lomi Lomi incorporates the feeling of ALOHA, which in the Hawaiian language, stands for much more than just “hello” or “goodbye” or “love.” Its deeper meaning is “the joyful (oha) sharing (alo) of life energy (ha) in the present (alo).” The feeling is a deeper connection to self and others.
The physical massage techniques applied depends on the practitioners training and style. However, many of the techniques include full-body length strokes utilizing hands, elbows and forearms. The strokes are soothing, rhythmic and fluid are incorporated with doing the Hula, dance like motions, accompanied with breath work. The movements are important to assisting the energy flow between both the practitioner and the recipient.
Also known as “Loving Hands” massage, this technique can be deep or gentle yet is applied with love and healing intention. The long, continuous, flowing strokes are devoted to the recipient with loving thoughts to assist in their healing of breaking old patterns or beliefs that no longer serve their higher being. These old patterns are thought to be stored in the cells of the body, therefore are released within the anatomical and physiological aspects of the body.
The “Loving Hands” technique also incorporates what Hawaiians know as Ho’o’pono’pono or an act of reconciliation or forgiveness with oneself or another. This loving act of forgiveness can release unnecessary stress and anxiety locked inside oneself. Ho’o’pono’pono allows a sense of clarity and alignment in all relationships in one’s life.
Brief History of Lomi Lomi Massage
Historically created by Hawaiian Kahuna’s (spiritual teachers), this type of massage was developed by the Kahuna lā’au lapa’au as a practice to help the receiver experience a sense of clarity and alignment. The teaching which is now called Huna was originally called Ho’omana. Ho’o means to make. Mana means life force (equivalent to Ki, Chi or Shakti in various languages). Taken together the word Ho’omana means empowerment or to empower. The purpose of the original teaching was, then, learning the ways to increase life force.
Developed and practiced among these teachers, these scope and depth of their spiritual understandings of these practices is profound and sophisticated.
In the early 1800’s when missionaries came to Hawaii, they outlawed all medicinal practices of the Kahuna’s state wide, including Lomi Lomi. Not only was it illegal to practice their massage techniques, all forms of mysticism and prayer were also outlawed. It wasn’t until the late 1900’s where Hawaiian’s were legally allowed to practice their native form of healing practices openly.
